Scripture – 1 John 5:5
“Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
For so many of us, Jesus is probably the last thing on our mind when we are facing adversity. We are likely to try almost anything before we get to a place where we are at the end of our rope and find ourselves desperately throwing up a token “God help me” prayer lacking anything more than an iota of faith that anyone’s listening let alone cares.
Yet this verse in 1 John 5 is trying to convince us that simply having the faith to believe that the man Jesus was and is the very son of God is what enables us to overcome not only the daily adversities we all face, but anything and everything the world chucks at us.
It seems too simple, too easy, too good for there really to be any truth in it. And yet…what if?
Let us turn our attention to this question, what if?
If we would just simply believe the words we trust are of God and start each day this week understanding that if Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33), and if we are now hidden in him (colossians 3:3) and if we now believe he is the son of God, then we will be the ones who will overcome all that the world throws our way.
Jesus, help me take practical steps today in the knowledge that I am an over-comer, not because of my own strength, but because I have faith that you are God’s Son. I needn’t worry about anything because I am completely hidden in you. Increase my faith in you and in your power today. I love you will all that I am. Amen.
