Becoming the Church: community

Scripture – Acts 2:44-45 & Acts 4:32-34

44 All the believers were together and had everything in common45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them.

Observation

The DNA of the Early Church. Unity and Community. Sacrifice and Sharing. Generosity and Grace.

What does it take to be one in heart? The same faith in the same God.

What does it take to be one in mind? The same understanding of what this same faith means practically in our lives.

By this point there were at least 5000 men plus women and children in the church at Jerusalem; a veritable mega-church. Each one of them had been a “Christian” for less than a few months. And despite the huge numbers there was such clarity of exactly what this new life entailed, that everyone was ‘all together and had everything in common’. The leadership needed to communicate this clearly. People truly believed that everything they had, material possessions and otherwise, were for the benefit of the entire body and not just for themselves.

God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. Wow. When we grasp the magnitude of the grace of God, the free gift of salvation from what we deserved, this idea of sacrificing and sharing becomes a natural response.

Application

It takes time and thought to become a community where no-one is in need because we have become one in heart and mind and have turned that into grace in action. How are we as a body to know what the needs are? How are we as a body to know what we have to give and to share? How are we as a body to create a centralized system of connecting the time, treasure and talents within our body to the needs of our body?

Prayer

Jesus, my King and my God, I pray you download spiritual plans and strategies straight from the throne of God to enable us to serve and love your body as the Apostles in Jerusalem 2000 years ago . We are part of Your body, Your kingdom, Your family. Arrange all the parts of your body the way you have desired and have designed. I am your son today and forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
