But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit…
Stephen, one of the seven men chosen in Acts 6 to be responsible for the day-to-day workings of the first church in Jerusalem, was not only a pastor who loves to serve the people, he was also a man of the Word. In his response to the high priest, he tells the story of Jesus starting from Abraham all the way to the resurrection, using five books of the Bible as his sources (Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Isaiah and Amos). The Pharisees and teachers of the Law knew the content of these books, but because they did not KNOW the WORD of God (that is, Jesus), the revelation of how Jesus was the central theme throughout all Scripture was lost on them.
We each need to be in the Word of God everyday while asking the Holy Spirit who lives inside us to illuminate Jesus throughout all Scripture so that we can have a Scripture-based answer for anyone who would ask us about the hope to which we cling.
The Word of God being taught to us by the Holy Spirit. We need this as we mature in Christ as his disciples.
Holy Spirit, illuminate in my heart today the Word of God, showing me Jesus on every page. Fill me that I may speak the truth with boldness. Father, be glorified today in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
