Becoming a disciple: offering your gifts to God

Scripture – Exodus 36:3-7

And the people continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning. 4 So all the skilled workers who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left what they were doing 5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

6 Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more, 7 because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.

The people of Israel were moved in their hearts to bring their offerings to be used in the building of the Tabernacle of God. They so wanted to contribute to the effort that they kept bringing more and more, so much so that they had to be restrained. Can you imagine?

The most important skill of the craftsmen, Oholiab and Bezalel, was being able to take all the different gifts of the people and make them into a cohesive, unified structure. It must have been an incredibly difficult task to receive pieces of jewelry, wood, and cloth from 1.5 million people and put them altogether to build the Sanctuary.

What is important to grasp is that for the people, even though most of them were not actually doing the construction, each one who brought what they had to offer, whether large or small, much or little, they felt like they played their part and therefore a deeper sense of ownership was developed. Maybe the phrase “He is my God and I am his people” began to take root in their hearts.

Let us bring together each person’s spiritual gifts, God-given talents, learned skills, life experiences, and heart passions, and like skilled craftsmen weaving these offerings together to build the body of Christ and advance the Kingdom of God.

Let each person feel and know that what they have to offer is valuable and that God wants to use it for His Kingdom.

Let there be such an outpouring of offering that there is always an abundance.

Jesus. You are worthy. You are holy. Your plans and your purposes are that which we desire. God would you stir an outpouring from your people of everything you have given them that they now turn and offer it all to advance your Kingdom here on the earth. Let the local church be like a skilled craftsmen in the weaving together of every type of gift and offering so that your Name would be known in all the earth. I am your son today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
