Becoming a disciple: Cleaning house

Scripture – Mark 11:27-28

They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.  “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

Observation

Who do you think you are? This was essentially what the Jewish leaders were asking Jesus.

Yesterday Jesus turned up at the Temple and kicked out those who were selling doves and other animals that people could buy to sacrifice. Imagine the scene: the temple courts had become a farmer’s market with its ancient versions of ATMs and foreign currency exchange kiosks. On the one hand, there was a great buzz of activity in the house of God and of course the Temple was the number one tourist attraction in Jerusalem, but on the other, that wasn’t what God intended for his house. Jesus walks in and causes quite a ruckus as he overturns the tables, sending coins and birds flying everywhere!

So today Jesus is walking through the temple courts and the Jewish leaders ask him “who do you think you are and what right do you have to come in here and turn the place upside down?”

Jesus is the Son of God. It is His house. He turns the place upside down because his Father told him to and gave him the authority to do so.

Jesus has been coming to the temple since he was a young boy. Every time he entered he must have wanted to do what he got to do that day. I think of all those times he taught in the temple courts, with all the sights, sounds and smells of the marketplace going on around him – forcing himself to focus on teaching and trusting God that there was a time coming when he would be able to clean house. Imagine coming home one day to find a whole bunch of people have moved into your house, brought in their own furniture, turned your living room into a pet store and your kitchen into a make-shift bank. No one knows its your house and you know you can’t do anything until the appointed time because you have an assignment and there is an order and a plan to follow.

Application

Do we have the eyes of Christ in the things we do?

Do we need to clean house in our own lives, our own hearts?

Jesus is patient with us, but if we have accepted him as the Son of God who has paid for our sins, then we have become the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of God.

Our lives is how God has decided to show himself to the world, so our lives need to be clean of the junk that makes us look like the rest of the world.

Prayer

Jesus, show me what areas of my life you need to come in and clean out. I want to be a walking testimony to you and your Gospel. Come and overturn whatever is ungodly so that I can better reflect you. In your name, amen.
